San Marino
This small independent state surrounded on all sides by Italy and
founded by Marino in IVth century, has maintained its independence
since its inception and is the oldest republic in the world.
Its territory is very rugged, mostly occupied by Mount Titano
(738m), abrupt branch of the Apennines.
Its capital, San Marino, extends above the western slope of Mount
Titano. By the need to preserve its independence the city was
surrounded with a wall, and between XIth and XIIIth centuries
were built three towers at the three highest points of the city.
From them you can see very beautiful views.
Its old town is well maintained and very picturesque and has
several palaces and museums. The best way to access this area
is by cable car (called funivia).
An interesting aspect of the Republic of San Marino is the figure
of the Captains Regent. Could equate to heads of state and are
renewed every six months designated by the political parties in
opposition. On April 1 and October 1 held takeovers of this office
that dates back to 1243.
