Macedonia
It is located in south-central Balkan Peninsula. Macedonia is often
referred as the land of the lakes or the pearl of the Balkans. It
is rich in water resources and it has about 50 lakes, big and small.
It is also a mountainous country with very beautiful natural
landscapes, which annually attracts many adventure tourists. Most
of its 346 caves are still unexplored and it has four hunting
territories and you can even try to get gold sifting at least
four rivers. It also has several ski resorts.
Skopje, the capital, is strategically located in a Balkan crossroads,
midway between Tirana and Sofia. Its modern architecture offers
an interesting contrast with the old part of town, giving it a
unique charm. Rich in history, monuments and events, Skopje has
much to offer all types of visitors.
The city of Ohrid, on the banks of its namesake lake, is the
most visited place in the country. For its exquisite natural beauty
and historical and cultural heritage has been declared World Heritage
by UNESCO. It is also famous for its 365 churches, one for each
day of the year. Ohrid Lake, surrounded by several beaches and
Byzantine monasteries, besides being one of the deepest in the
world (288m).
In the city of Bitola, you can visit the ruins of Heraclea, a
city that was founded by Philip II of Macedonia in the IVth b.C
and conquered by the Romans; several remains are preserved.
